Bike biomechanical set up

Within a range of parameters it is necessary to have a set up or position on the bike that allows for your riding style, which mirrors your anatomy or helps treat discomfort and injury.cycling

It is generally accepted that you fit the bike to the rider, not the other way around.  However, this may not mean you are getting the best out of your body in terms of performance and comfort.  Nor preventing injuries.

Most riders will benefit from a bike-fit.  Most people who ride never get one.  The aim is to get the rider’s position within an acceptable range for their performance or recreational pursuits.  Sometimes the adjustments are miniscule.  The difference is often significant.

For serious riders, particularly those in their 30’s and upwards, bike set-up is a continual process.  We all get older and one of the unfortunate facts of life is that we degenerate.  A bike set-up done 12 months in the past may not be relevant today.

You may have multiple bikes or multiple disciplines (for example, road and time trial bikes / road and mountain bikes), each requiring specific set-ups.

Any form of injury, not treated or fixed to complete resolution, will require adaptation on the bike.  Therefore either the injury needs to be properly treated or the set-up will eventually have to change.

Perhaps your set-up is just plain causing injury? Perhaps you want to go faster?

So why get fitted?  Besides the reasons already mentioned, maybe you:

  • Suffer from knee / hip / back / shoulder / neck / wrist pain (amongst others!)
  • Get pins and needles in your hands?
  • Develop crotch (perineal) soreness?  Genital and urinary dysfunction?
  • Develop foot soreness or ‘hot spots’?
  • Feel uncomfortable on the bike?  Immediately? After a couple of hours?
  • Lack balance whilst riding or turning?
  • Slide around on your saddle (forward/backward, side to side)?
  • Can’t alternate hand position on the bars properly or without discomfort?
  • Can’t reach the brakes from the drops?
  • Find it hard to spin easily or at pace?  Can’t get enough power?

  • In depth, physical assessment relevant to cycling.
